The Roanoke River Maritime Museum,
just across the street from the
Roanoke River Lighthouse, transports
visitors into the lives of everyday
people— fishermen, farmers,
foresters, sailors, merchants,
soldiers, papermakers and more via a
wealth of
photographs and artifacts.
Housed
in a former automobile dealership
across from the lighthouse, displays
and artifacts fill the 5000 foot
interior. Photographs arranged in
unique displays provide an insight
to the lifestyles of how the local
population interacted with nature
and the land.
Exhibits include the maritime
influence in neighboring communities
like Jamesville, Roper and Creswell,
as well.
Take an
imaginary journey on the
Mayflower as it travels local
waters carrying passengers and goods
until the fateful day it capsized.
Study the locally built 1889
vernacular fishing boat which stands
as a centerpiece to the main
gallery. Used by three generations
for over 100 years the vessel not
only fished local waters, but was
used to peddle produce and fish
traveling to various towns along the
Albemarle.
Youngsters (or the young-at-heart)
can enjoy pretending to navigate a
boat. An aquarium features native
fish. Displays share the story of
East Carolina University students'
underwater archeological
explorations of sunken ships from
exciting Civil War battles and
ordinary, but exciting, travels
through the river’s shortcuts.
Exhibits on early boatbuilding help
chronicle the evolution from paddle
to sail to motor. Visitors will even
get to know a little about some of
the colorful local characters.From
transportation, fishing, hunting or
just plain fun, the story is
captured in the Roanoke River
Maritime Museum.
The
Outer Banks Lighthouse Society will
also have displays on the seaside
lights that have made the North
Carolina lighthouses famous. The
exhibits will serve as a gateway for
visitors providing information and
inspiration for their journey to the
shore.
